Graduate Studies at the Nexus of

Global Horticulture and Human Nutrition to Enhance Community Resilience and Food Security

Graduate students traveled to Timor-Leste in May of 2018 and worked with the grassroots organization HIAM Health, which empowers communities and educates the Timorese people about eating healthy in a country plagued by malnutrition. HIAM Health operates community-based nutrition gardens around the country, some in partnership with USAID’s Avansa Agrikultura project.

Students traveled to the Maliana and Alieu districts in rural Timor-Leste, and studied about Timorese culture and critical issues facing the country during their stay in the capital of Dili. Student activities included working and exploring the varied farms around the country, conducting a needs assessment with a group of community farmers, training community members about healthy eating and sanitary habits, and much more.

“My excitement grew everyday leading up to the trip. The idea of learning about a different country both in culture and horticulture practices was so enticing. After arriving and spending two weeks submerged in the culture and people, my initial excitement expanded even more. It made me want to go more, to do more, and to help more people in other areas of the world. Timor-Leste was an unforgettable experience and I believe it has helped shape my vision of the future.”
